Material care guide
To ensure the longevity of your newly acquired KØGE pieces, we have compiled a material care guide detailing the best practices for preserving the materials used in our products. Adhering to these care instructions will help maintain both the aesthetic and functional quality of your items through frequent use and cleaning. We recommend regular dusting and cleaning for optimal upkeep. Unless specified otherwise, all items are designed for indoor use only.
How to care: Stainless steel
Stainless steel, an alloy of iron and chromium, is known for its strength and durability, making it an ideal choice for KØGE's high-use environments. It is highly resistant to corrosion, rust, and staining, which enhances its suitability for various conditions.
Maintenance & cleaning
To maintain its pristine condition, stainless steel should be cleaned routinely with a pH-neutral soap and water solution using a sponge or cloth. Typically, cleaning once or twice a year is sufficient due to its resistance to oxidation and residue buildup. Post-cleaning, rinse and dry the surface with a soft cloth, aligning with the metal grain to avoid streaks. Certain metals in the KØGE collection are untreated to naturally develop a unique patina over time.

Like many natural materials, stainless steel will acquire a distinctive patina as it ages, enhancing its character and aesthetic appeal.
How to care: Varnished wood
Varnished wood features a smooth, protective finish that enhances the natural beauty of the wood while offering resistance against spills and stains. This finish is perfect for maintaining the wood's pristine appearance with minimal upkeep required.
Maintenance & cleaning
For routine cleaning, use a soft cloth slightly dampened with water or a mild wood cleaner. Avoid abrasive cleaners and sponges that can damage the finish. For occasional deep cleaning, a mild detergent diluted in water can be used, followed by a dry cloth to prevent water marks. Avoid excessive moisture. The varnish provides good protection, but it is still advisable to use coasters and placemats to prevent ring marks and scratches.
Did you know?
Although varnished wood is designed to be low maintenance, regular dusting will help prevent surface dirt from building up and potentially scratching the wood finish. Additionally, it's wise to keep the wood out of direct sunlight as prolonged exposure can fade the finish over time.
How to care: Oiled wood
For optimal care, we suggest oiling your wooden KØGE products biannually with a natural wood oil. Ensure all pieces are kept indoors unless stated otherwise. Use a soft, damp cloth for regular cleaning and avoid chemical-based cleaners to maintain the integrity of the wood.
Oiling treatment
- Begin by wiping the wood with a warm, damp cloth to remove any dust or debris.
- Once dry, apply oil (such as tung oil or hard wax oil) using a soft cloth or sponge. Avoid direct application of oil onto the wood surface.
- Spread the oil evenly along the wood grain, covering the entire surface. Allow the oil to penetrate for about 20 minutes.
- Wipe off excess oil with a dry, soft cloth, ensuring an even finish.
- Buff the surface with another clean soft cloth to achieve a uniform sheen and allow to dry completely.
Did you know?
Treating the edges of the wood more frequently can prevent dryness and cracking, especially during colder months. Light sanding can repair scratches, followed by an application of natural furniture oil. Remember to oil both the top and underside of the wood to prevent uneven moisture distribution and subsequent cracking. Exercise caution with oil-soaked rags and papers as they can spontaneously combust. Always air dry them after use. As with all natural materials, your wooden pieces will develop a characteristic patina over time.
